improvements to bronx bus services coming soon! (plus a note on kingsbridge rd IND)

MTA New York City Transit’s latest Committee Meeting Report includes several notes on Bronx bus routes and the Kingsbridge Road IND ADA project. Starting in April, some Bronx bus routes will see service increases; additionally, the MTA will introduce a new Bronx bus route. Also, MTA proposes major changes to the Bx15, Bx41, and Bx55 to take place this summer.

[New Bronx Bus Route: Bx46]

As part of MTA’s Service Investments package, a new bus route – the Bx46 – will connect southwestern Hunts Point to the Longwood Avenue 6 train station and the Prospect Avenue 2/5 train station. The new route also serves Barretto Point Park, providing full-time transit access to a place normally served only by shuttle buses on summer weekends. The Bx46 will run every 30 minutes at all times according to the following schedule:
Weekdays: 5:30AM – 11:30PM from Prospect Avenue to the Hunts Point markets; 6:00AM – midnight from the markets to Prospect Avenue.
Weekends: 8:30AM – 10:30PM from Prospect Avenue to the Hunts Point markets; 9:00AM – 11:00PM from the markets to Prospect Avenue.

For a map of the new route, see page 154 of the Committee Meeting PDF file linked above. The Bx46 service starts this April.

[Bx41 Select Bus Service (SBS) and Bx15/Bx55 Service Changes]

In an effort to improve bus service along Webster and Third Avenues in The Bronx, MTA (in a coördinated effort with the NYC Dept. of Transportation) will introduce SBS to the Bx41 (see this presentation for the latest on the plan). Bx41 +SBS service will replace the Bx41 Limited (a rush-hour only operation); the SBS will presumably run all times except late nights, providing faster – and more frequent – bus service along Webster Avenue. Bx41 local bus service remains unchanged but will run every 10-12 minutes all day.

The forthcoming SBS also means changes to current Bx15/Bx55 service. MTA plans to replace the Bx55 with a new Bx15 Limited; the proposed Bx15 LTD makes all current Bx55 LTD stops from Fordham Plaza to The Hub, then all local stops to 12th Ave – 125th Street in Manhattan. Bx15 Local service runs in The Bronx only, making all stops from Fordham Plaza to The Hub. Service north of Fordham Plaza from Third Avenue faces the ax; instead, riders must transfer to/from Bx41 local or +SBS buses. The revised Bx15 local/LTD pattern, as well as the Bx41 +SBS, both begin this summer – but there will be a public hearing on the matter sometime in March.

SIDE NOTE: Also up for discussion in the forthcoming public hearing is a booth relocation at the Kingsbridge Road station on the Concourse Line. Since the forthcoming ADA elevators will connect to the Kingsbridge Road side of the station, MTA proposes moving the station agent from the 196th Street end to the Kingsbridge Road end.

SIDE NOTE 2: The Bx41 +SBS presentation also includes plans for a Bronx – LaGuardia Airport SBS that begins at Fordham Plaza, makes Bx41 +SBS stops to The Hub, another stop at 3rd Ave – 138th Street (connection to (6) train), and then to Queens and LGA (likely via the current M60 route). This Bronx – LGA SBS is likely coming later than the Bx41 +SBS.

  1. I am not overly concerned with replacing the bx55 with
the express bx15. However, what concerns me is you can not use a transfer from bx15 to bx 15. I do not always have a unlimited. If this is the only third avenue bus route, what is the proposed remedy? Mta is solely responsible for ensuring that I can use my transfer. If I ride the local 15, I should be able to go home within the time permitted using a transfer from that same route.

Any suggestions? Who do I contact?

    1. AFAIK, it’s always been MTA’s policy that you can’t transfer from a local route to a limited version of the same route with a pay-per-ride card. The exception is transfers between +selectbusservice routes and local versions of route (e.g. between Bx12 +SBS and Bx12 local).

You can try contacting MTA by using this link and choosing your preferred method of contact (or dial 511 and listen for instructions). Alternatively, you can raise awareness of this issue by bringing it up at a Community Board meeting (preferably the general or a Transportation Committee meeting); perhaps local elected officials can lobby MTA for a change in transfer policy since the Bx15 local and LTD won’t share the same route. Which CB represents your neighborhood?
