On this edition of the NYTIP INSIDER, I explore a controversial topic – the proposed LaGuardia Airport (LGA) AirTrain. If you’ve read my SAS/LGA extension post, you know that I strongly prefer a subway extension. However, I must consider the very real possibility that Governor Cuomo gets what he wants regarding this AirTrain. If it gets built, what does that mean for NYTIP?

NYTIP INSIDER – jump-starting the subway amidst the rona
UPDATE (12.13.2021): Post revised to reflect updates to the enhanced NYC subway.
The novel coronavirus, a.k.a. COVID-19, wreaked havoc on mass transit systems nationwide. In NYC, lockdowns, telework, changes in commuting behavior, and increased wariness about transit use led to massive ridership drops on subways, buses, and commuter rail. Worse, vehicular traffic has already returned to pre-pandemic levels – and it’ll likely worsen.
With no sign of relief in sight, the MTA warned of doomsday cuts at a level not seen in decades. Given these dire circumstances, where does that leave NYTIP?

[Onward!]NYTIP INSIDER – on the delicate balance between de-interlining and destabilization
If you’ve read my blog for any length of time, you’ve noticed I’m hard at work on a personal project called the New York Transportation Improvement Plan, or NYTIP. With regard to subways, NYTIP prescribes a three-point plan – enhance, extend, and expand. NYTIP is about the long game, but in order to win that game, one must lay the proper foundation.
[let’s set the foundation!]bah humbug no more! new rochelle bike share, westchester county’s first, not leaving after all!
UPDATE (04.02.2022): Removed dead links and made minor edits.
After arriving with much fanfare, I received a shocking update on New Rochelle Bike Share via email yesterday. The update? An press release whose title explains it all – Bike Share to Leave New Rochelle. (Unfortunately, the link to the press release is dead and no record exists on the Wayback Machine.)
Since there’s literally nothing about this on the media or Google, I gotta ask – what the hell happened?!
[let’s find out]what american transit systems can learn from costa rica, in pictures
I just returned from a five-day, four-night getaway in Costa Rica. The occasion was my wife’s cousin’s birthday, but being the geek that I am, I decided to photograph some of Costa Rica’s infrastructure. As I did, I noticed something about Costa Rica’s bus stops that many American bus stops lack – even in transit-rich cities like New York.

UPDATE (10.19.2022): Post revised to reflect v1.0.0 v0.8.0 of the enhanced NYC subway.
Welcome to my ongoing NYTIP series! Recall my three-point plan to fix the NYC Subway – enhance, extend, and expand. In this post, I will address “low-hanging fruit” opportunities to enhance the NYC Subway.
[taste and see!]pix: the soon-to-be-a-memorial highway, future home of the linc
UPDATE (04.02.2022): Updated links and made minor edits.
Memorial Highway in New Rochelle is an excessively wide road originally designed to connect I-95 to the Cross-County Parkway. However, it only exists as a stub that doesn’t connect to much of anything. Recently, Governor Cuomo awarded New Rochelle a $10 million grant; of this amount, New Rochelle will spend $6 $12 million on The Linc – a project transforming Memorial Highway from a useless car sewer to a useful linear park! Last week, I took many photos of the area. Let’s take a trip, shall we?
NYTIP – extending the nyc subway: utica and nostrand avenues
UPDATE (03.28.2022): Post updated with the Livonia El extension.
Welcome back to my ongoing NYTIP series! In this post, I’ll discuss Brooklyn IRT extensions on two dense corridors – Utica Avenue and Nostrand Avenue.
[let’s go!]
